4943 N. Seeley Avenue, Chicago
Overview: This project was an award-winning Artifex single-family spec-remodel. Although the work was done throughout the house, including kitchen and bath remodeling, the areas of greatest concentration were an extensive exterior facelift and the finishing of a previously unusable basement.
This modest 100-year-old home is located in Lincoln Square, an increasingly popular, gentrifying neighborhood on the north side of Chicago. The exterior was ugly, dated, and lacking character. The basement was unfinished and unusable.
Exterior: The complete exterior of the house was addressed, but the footprint of the house remained unchanged. The goals were to add character, curb-appeal and value within a limited budget (the interior needed plenty of work too!).
For this project, a detailed front facade was created and the existing front porch was extensively remodeled with new custom columns, railings, balusters, beadboard ceiling and lighting. New siding was added to the other three sides of the house. New double-pane windows and three exterior doors (wooden front door, sliding glass rear door and steel basement door) were also added.
To meet these challenges in a creative way, Artifex drew upon a variety of period-appropriate details, mixing them to their own liking. To build it, they hit upon a combination of wood, MDO and vinyl products for the exterior and assigned Artifex's most meticulous finish carpenter to the task.
